HoCoPoLitSo (Howard County Poetry and Literature Society), in partnership with the Howard County Conservancy will present a family-focused afternoon of poetry and nature with acclaimed poet JOY HARJO reading from her works at 3 PM on Sunday, October 5, 2008, at the Howard County Conservancy, 10520 Old Frederick Road, Woodstock, Maryland 21163-0175. This inter-generational event, with a focus on nature and the environment through the lens of poetry, will take children on a supervised nature walk with a lesson on haiku (poetry) with poet Tim Singleton, while adults hear and discuss poetry with Ms. Harjo. A book sale and reception will follow. Tickets are $10 per individual, $5 for each additional family member to a maximum of $25. As an award-winning poet, a musician, a singer and songwriter, a screenwriter, a teacher, and editor, alburquerqueARTS says Joy Harjo “redefines multi-tasking.” She is an internationally, renowned artist and performer and a member of the Muscogee tribe of the Mvosake/Creek nation. She has published seven acclaimed poetry collections, her most recent - How I Became Human, New and Selected Poems; an award-winning children’s book, The Good Luck Cat; and co-edited with Gloria Bird Reinventing the Enemy’s Language, Native Women’s Writing of North America, an anthology of contemporary Native women’s writing, in addition to contributing poetic prose to Secrets from the Center of the World, a book of photographs by Stephen Strom.
A poet of numerous awards and accolades, she has received The American Indian Distinguished Achievement Award, the William Carlos Williams Award, an American Book Award for In Mad Love and War, the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Award, a Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award, among many, many others. Harjo co-wrote a screenplay for an award-winning film called “ A Thousand Roads,” for the National Museum of the American Indian. An accomplished musician, she plays both the flute and tenor saxophone. Her first band
called Poetic Justice combined music from jazz to rock to Creek songs with her poetry. She also co-produced and was featured in a music video that aired on PBS called Eagle Song, in which she was nominated for the best music video at the American Indian Film Festival in 2002. Reinventing the Enemy’s Language was pronounced one of The London Observer’s Best Books of 1997. Featured on the Bill Moyers “The Power of the Word” series, she will also be featured on a new Garrison Keillor show. Subsequent honors include narrating the Turner Native Americans Series and the Emmy-award winning program, Navajo Codetalkers for National Geographic.

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is opening Freestyle, a new teen drop-in center at Ridgely's Run Community Center, 8400 Mission Road, Jessup. The center, designed by teens, for teens, will offer a choice of hanging out with friends, playing basketball and video games, listening to music, having a snack at the Snack Shop and other activities.
